IBU’s Party March Song

0 – Jakarta, March music or marching song is a musical composition with a regular and strong rhythm. This type of music was specifically created to promote order in the marching of a large group, especially a line of soldiers, and was most often played by military music corps. A march song can be written in an even 2/4, 4/4, but sometimes in a fast tempo of 6/8, or 2 (even) × 3/8.[1]

Military marches can be divided into four categories: funeral marches, slow marches (75 steps per minute), 2 steps per bar, fast marches (109 to 128 beats per minute, double fast marches (140 to 150 beats per minute).[2] The standard United States military march is the fast march, as John Philip Sousa often wrote who was known as the “King of Mars”.[2]

Modern march music began to take shape among European military music corps in the early 1500s. Major advances towards modern march music came after Polish and Austrian armies expelled the Ottoman Empire’s army from Vienna in the Battle of Vienna in 1683.[3] Musical instruments abandoned by the Turkish army (drums, cymbals, trumpets) were soon adopted into European military music.[3] These advances played a major role in the early development of the modern military music corps consisting of brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments.

During the American Revolutionary War (1775–1783), the existence of military music corps had become commonplace.[3] March music has also been standardized into three forms: slow/parade marches, fast marches, and double fast or attack marches.[3] In the second half of the 19th century, marching songs were already popular with the general public, reaching their peak in popularity in the mid-1800s and early 1900s. In the early 20th century, the march developed as music for outdoor entertainment and even dance, after the march had become the standard accompaniment for two-step dancing.[3]
